BREAKING CANCER HEREDITARY CYCLES…
Pink Hope is a patient-focused organisation dedicated to supporting individuals in understanding and minimising their risk of hereditary cancer. Their mission is to provide evidence-based information, empowering individuals to break the cycle of cancer within their families and facilitate life-saving conversations.
As a preventative health hub, Pink Hope equips their community with the necessary tools to assess, manage, and reduce their risk of breast and ovarian cancer. They understand the significance of personalised support for women who are at risk, and we strive to deliver tailored assistance.
About
At Pink Hope, our aim is to empower all Australians to comprehend and take action regarding hereditary cancer risk. Through education about their health history, provision of evidence-based resources, and connection to a supportive community, we empower individuals to proactively manage their health. We firmly believe in supporting individuals at every stage of their journey and offer continuous assistance.
We actively collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure seamless transitions for at-risk women as they progress through each phase of their journey. Additionally, we advocate for open discussions surrounding family health history in Australia through targeted campaigns and educational initiatives. By advocating for women at risk of breast and ovarian cancer and their families, our ultimate goal is to achieve earlier diagnoses, risk reduction, and improved treatment options.
With our patient-centred approach and collaborative efforts, we strive to make a lasting impact in the fight against hereditary cancer, creating a healthier future for all Australians.
Founder
Pink Hope was founded by Krystal Barter, an influential women’s health activist, speaker, and author, who drew inspiration from her own family’s battle with cancer. Krystal’s family had a hereditary predisposition to cancer caused by a fault in the BRCA1 gene, which is widely known due to Angelina Jolie’s public disclosure about her own experience. This genetic mutation significantly increases the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.
In 2009, at the young age of 25 and with a husband and young family, Krystal faced the challenging decision of breaking the cycle of cancer in her family. She chose to undergo a preventative double mastectomy to minimise her chances of developing breast cancer. This courageous step marked a turning point in her life and fuelled her determination to create a support system for other women at high risk of developing these cancers. Realising the absence of such a network, she founded Pink Hope.
In 2014, when Krystal was 31 years old, she took another significant step in her BRCA journey. She opted to undergo the removal of her fallopian tubes and one ovary, further reducing her risk of developing ovarian cancer. By sharing her personal story and undergoing these preventive measures, Krystal has become a source of inspiration and a beacon of hope for countless women facing similar challenges.
Driven by her own experience, Krystal’s mission with Pink Hope is to provide vital support and resources for at-risk women. Through the organisation, she strives to empower women to make informed decisions about their health and to support them throughout their journey. Pink Hope aims to educate, raise awareness, and facilitate access to appropriate healthcare options for individuals with a high risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
Under Krystal’s leadership, Pink Hope continues to expand its reach, advocating for better support, research, and resources for women at high risk of breast and ovarian cancer. The organisation plays a crucial role in fostering a sense of community, providing education, and offering guidance to individuals navigating the complex landscape of hereditary cancer. Through her tireless efforts, Krystal Barter has made an indelible impact on the lives of many and continues to be a catalyst for change in the field of women’s health.
