DEMI: WHAT WERE THE DRIVING FACTORS THAT SPARKED YOUR AMBITION?

My ambition began to take shape during my formative years, influenced by the fact that I grew up as the daughter of a businessperson. Being exposed to the dynamic world of business from an early age ignited a deep fascination within me. I found myself genuinely enjoying every aspect associated with it, which naturally paved the way for my decision to pursue Business and Economics during my time at College and University.

As I embarked on my journey of higher education, pursuing my BA (Hons) degree, my father played a pivotal role in nurturing my ambition. We would engage in insightful discussions about various business opportunities, enabling me to gain valuable insights and expand my understanding of the industry. In addition, I had the privilege of assisting my father with his property business, which provided me with hands-on experience and invaluable lessons.

Never underestimate yourself, you are able to achieve beyond your wildest dreams when you put your mind to it.

These experiences not only deepened my passion for business but also equipped me with practical knowledge and a strong foundation. They fuelled my ambition, driving me to explore new horizons and strive for entrepreneurial success.

Being a business owner holds immense significance to me as it allows me to immerse myself in a field that I am genuinely passionate about. It entails the fulfillment of working on something I have personally developed and brought to the market. The joy and satisfaction derived from knowing that customers who invest in my product genuinely appreciate and value it is truly invaluable. DEMI: PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST STARTUP EXPERIENCE & HOW IT INFLUENCED YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY?

During my master’s degree, I had the privilege of working on a project that eventually evolved into an International Business within the airline industry. This experience exposed me to the intricacies of the global business landscape and provided valuable insights into effective people management strategies.

Following this impactful endeavour, I embarked on my first entrepreneurial venture, establishing an elite events company. This chapter of my journey proved to be an extraordinary experience, brimming with countless learning opportunities. While the road was challenging and demanded a steep learning curve, my passion for what I was doing propelled me forward. I dedicated myself to acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills, which continue to be instrumental in my present endeavours.

The journey of running the events company not only equipped me with practical expertise but also nurtured my resilience and determination. I faced diverse challenges head-on and honed my problem-solving abilities along the way. The skills and lessons I acquired during that time still hold immense value, shaping my approach to business to this day.

DEMI: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS WHO ARE CONSIDERING STARTING THEIR OWN BUSINESS?

Embarking on the journey of starting a business is no small feat. It requires careful consideration of numerous aspects, including thorough research of your sector and target market. This preliminary step is crucial in laying a strong foundation for your business. Subsequently, developing a comprehensive business plan that encompasses all facets of your venture is essential.

Fortunately, in this digital age, a wealth of information is readily available on the internet, and reputable organisations exist to provide guidance on the fundamentals of entrepreneurship. By leveraging these resources, you can gain valuable insights and ensure that you are equipped with the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions.

However, beyond the practicalities and knowledge acquisition, the most significant factor I discovered in my entrepreneurial journey is the unwavering passion, drive, and commitment. It prompts a deep dive into market dynamics and encourages the development of contingency plans, ensuring preparedness for potential challenges.

During the initial stages, market acceptance was one of our greatest fears, and we recognised the importance of addressing it head-on. To overcome this fear, we dedicated our focus to research and development, allocating significant resources to understand and meet the expectations of our consumers. This proactive approach demonstrated our commitment to ensuring that our products align closely with market demands. The positive reception of our collection serves as a validation of the effectiveness of our strategy and the efforts we invested in understanding consumer wants.

Running a business presents a range of challenges that can differ for each entrepreneur. One significant hurdle I’ve encountered is securing financing and funding for a new venture, which often requires a well-developed and robust financial plan to attract potential investors or secure loans.

Another key challenge revolves around staffing and building a cohesive team. It’s not simply a matter of filling positions but rather finding individuals who genuinely align with the company’s vision and are motivated to contribute to its success. This involves identifying team members who possess the necessary skills and expertise, but also exhibit a shared sense of responsibility and dedication to lightening the workload on the business itself.

Navigating these challenges requires careful planning and strategic decision-making. In terms of financing, it is crucial to develop a comprehensive financial plan that outlines realistic projections, demonstrates the potential for profitability, and highlights the viability of the business. I have found inspiration from various individuals throughout my business journey. I consider myself fortunate to have had the unwavering support of my father and my husband. They have played pivotal roles in my entrepreneurial endeavours, providing guidance, encouragement, and the belief in my abilities to set up and expand my businesses.

My husband, in particular, has been a tremendous source of support. His unwavering belief in my capabilities has given me the courage to take the leap and establish my own business. His encouragement and backing have propelled me forward, enabling me to pursue new opportunities and ventures.

The support of loved ones can be instrumental in fuelling the entrepreneurial spirit. Their belief in us can instil the confidence needed to overcome challenges and pursue our goals. I am grateful to have had the encouragement and support of my father and husband on this journey, as they have played a significant role in shaping my business success.

DEMI: BASED ON YOUR EXPERIENCE, DO YOU BELIEVE THAT HAVING A BUSINESS PARTNER BENEFITS A VENTURE?

In the past, I had a business partner who had a deep understanding of the media aspect of the market. Our collaboration was successful because we both embraced specific roles within the company. This experience has taught me the importance of clear role delineation when entering into a business partnership and underscores the significance of knowing your partner well before embarking on such ventures.

Moreover, my husband, who is also the designer and co-founder of our business, has been a major benefit to the business. With his background in the high-end engineering market, it felt like a natural progression to combine our manufacturing expertise with our creative vision, leading us to establish the premium brand ‘Capra NV’ in the luxury sector.

The synergy between our skill sets and shared vision has been instrumental in shaping our business journey. By merging our manufacturing knowledge and creative passion, we have been able to carve out a niche in the luxury market and bring our brand to life.

The collaboration with my former business partner, who brought valuable expertise in media, and the creative partnership with my husband, combining engineering and design, have both had a significant impact on my entrepreneurial journey. To increase your chances of success as an entrepreneur, consider the following advice:

DEMI: WHAT ARE THE KEY FACTORS YOU BELIEVE CONTRIBUTE TO ACHIEVING SUCCESS IN BUSINESS?

Dream Big: Set your goals and work towards them.  Not everyone will agree with them but have the strength and conviction to believe in them.

Begin: Getting started can be the hardest aspect of all, but just do it! Get the ball rolling, do your research, and start your business do not procrastinate! Fear will halt everything.

Risk: Every successful person takes risks. You will have to sacrifice something or a number of things to make the business happen, but this is all part of the journey. It all makes you stronger.

Support:  Try to surround yourself with positive people as this will help keep you focused and encourage you to keep going. Do not listen to those who say it’s not possible. People like Richard Branson would not have achieved everything they have if they had listened to all the negativity.

Research: Always look to analyse everything. If you are testing the market with your product, ensure you analyse what the results show.

Connect: Business owners must network as it’s a way to not only meet people who can bring you more business but also a way to connect you with others and share information.

QUEEN’S AWARD

DEMI: COULD YOU SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE OF WINNING THE QUEEN’S AWARD AND MEETING QUEEN ELIZABETH II?

Receiving the Queens ‘Professional & Academic Achievement Award’ came as a complete surprise to me. I had been nominated confidentially by a staff member from the institution where I pursued my BA(Hons) Business degree. The nomination was for my development of the first electronic order processing system for the International Inflight catering industry, known as (IFCA). When I received the invitation to attend an event at Buckingham Palace, I had no idea what it entailed. It was only then that I discovered I was a finalist among 5000 candidates.

It all began in 1996 when I created this pioneering system, predating the e-shopping systems we commonly use on the internet today. I entered it into the ‘Mercury Awards,’ a prestigious event in the world of ‘International Flight Catering Awards.’ I vividly recall presenting the system to a panel of international airline industry leaders from around the globe, feeling like the youngest participant.

Months later, the award ceremony took place, and I found myself competing against major international airline companies in the ‘Technology’ category. As the awards were announced—bronze, silver, and gold—I felt a mix of anticipation and doubt. It wasn’t until I heard my product and company name being called out that I realised I had won. The moment was overwhelming, and I froze momentarily, surrounded by the Managing Director of my company and other department heads, who urged me to go forward.

Attending the elegant reception at Buckingham Palace was a surreal experience. I had the opportunity to meet incredible individuals, including other deserving award winners who had achieved remarkable things despite facing various challenges. Meeting members of the Royal Family, and especially having the privilege to shake hands and converse with Queen Elizabeth II, left me in awe. Even now, when I reflect on that encounter, it feels like a dream. The Queen is an extraordinary woman with a delightful sense of humour. It was a truly magical moment, and I will forever cherish the experience.

FUTURE

DEMI: WHAT CAN YOU SHARE ABOUT THE FUTURE PLANS AND UPCOMING DEVELOPMENT OF CAPRA NV?

As part of our continuous efforts to provide exceptional products, we are excited to share that we have plans to expand our range with the introduction of fountain pens. Fountain pens not only offer a timeless writing experience but also add a touch of elegance and sophistication to the act of writing.

In addition to our expansion in the writing instruments category, we are eagerly preparing for the upcoming launch of our Men’s and Women’s watch collections. Watches are not just functional timepieces; they are statement accessories that reflect personal style and enhance one’s overall look. Our meticulously crafted watch collections will cater to the distinct preferences of both men and women, offering a blend of style, quality, and functionality.

I love what I do because… I am able to be part of the whole process of creating and producing collections.

Never be afraid of… Achieving your dream!

My greatest talent is… I don’t think it’s a talent, but I do love learning about people and being able to get on with people from all walks of life.

My biggest challenge is… Doing my best at work and home.

I overcame that challenge by… Having a supportive husband and family.

When starting a business one must… Keep going as the road to setting up your own business is seldom free of issues and problems.

I Never go to work without … My Capra Pen, the Emmissary X in red with precious Garnet and my iPhone!

Best project … Too many to name all have been special in their own way!

I hope to one day… Be in a world where we can live in harmony and leave the world a good place for the coming generations.

In my spare time… I like to spend time with family and love travelling with my husband.

On the look… I love smart casual and love a good LBD or red Dress.

Favourite beauty products… Christian Dior Face creams and their make-up range. I love their colour pallets and their Dream cream.

Favourite fashion designers… There are so many I like. Ralph Lauren for day and casual, love Chanel for their classic suits and bags, Dolce and Gabbana for their dresses as I love the colour red which is featured throughout the Dolce and Gabbana collections.

On living… Live to the full.  Be kind! Be grateful! and enjoy making the memories.

On purpose… Life is what we make it.  It is no dress rehearsal! Be Kind and have compassion!

I absolutely love… Reading autobiographies and true stories about people who have achieved against all the odds on a personal level.

Success means… Being happy and being able to give back be it to the next generation or those who are less fortunate!

Living the dream means… Knowing your loved ones are well and said by Harriet Tubman “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”
