JOURNEY
It’s hard to imagine that the confident, charismatic Shelly Horton, who now graces the screens of TODAY and Talking Married, once called the small town of Kingaroy in Queensland home. With a population of just 5,000, Kingaroy could not be more different from the buzzing streets of Sydney, where Horton has built an impressive career.
But while Kingaroy may have been quiet, Shelly’s dreams were anything but. From a young age, she had big plans for herself—plans that reached far beyond the confines of her rural beginnings. Despite her humble start, Shelly’s ambition and unrelenting drive led her straight to the glitz and glamour of Sydney’s media scene.
Her rise is proof that no matter where you’re from, or how small the place you call home is, anything is possible if you’re willing to work for it. For Shelly, that meant taking risks, overcoming doubts, and following her passion for media all the way to the top.
Today, she’s a household name, known for her role as a TV presenter, media personality, and mentor. But Shelly’s story is about more than just success—it’s a reminder that with determination and a bold heart, you can break free from your circumstances and create the life you’ve always dreamed of.
Shelly’s journey is a beacon for anyone who feels limited by their surroundings. If she can go from the quiet streets of Kingaroy to owning the Sydney media scene, then so can you.

WHAT IT TAKES
DEMI: WHAT ARE SOME KEY FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO ACHIEVING SUCCESS?
Oh, where do I start?! To get where I am today, I had to make some big changes—and I’m not talking about a fresh haircut. Leaving my small hometown and everything I knew behind was scary, but it was absolutely necessary if I was going to make my dreams a reality. I packed up and moved to Sydney, starting at the very bottom, doing anything I could to get my foot in the door. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was all part of the hustle.
Success didn’t just fall into my lap. I’ve spent 25 years in the media industry, and trust me, it’s been a journey—one full of late nights, tough lessons, and plenty of “what am I doing with my life?” moments. But I knew that with enough determination, hard work, and a good dose of stubbornness, I could make it happen. And spoiler alert: I did.
Today, I’m lucky to have regular TV gigs, be a go-to speaker, and run my own media company, ShellShocked Media. But here’s the thing—it didn’t just happen because I had a dream. It happened because I showed up, kept pushing, and refused to take no for an answer. Success takes time. It takes setbacks. And most of all, it takes a truckload of grit.
So, my advice? Don’t expect it to be easy, but don’t let that stop you either. Keep going, keep learning, and when things get tough—keep hustling. The magic happens when you don’t give up.
PROUDEST MOMENT
DEMI: What has been your proudest moment in your career so far?
Ah, TV presenting will always be my first love—it’s what got me into this crazy industry, and I’m lucky enough to still have it as a regular part of my week. But if I’m being honest, my proudest moment has to be launching my own business, ShellShocked Media. That’s my baby. I’m obsessed with it. It brings everything I love together—from hosting MC gigs to presenting on Channel Nine and running my own business on top of it all. It’s the perfect work-life combo for me, and I feel so fortunate to be able to do what I love, day in and day out.
Starting your own business? Let me tell you, it’s hard. The hours are long, the risks are real, and the challenges are constant. But it’s also one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. There’s something incredibly special about creating something from scratch and watching it grow. Every time I see my clients flourish or land that big gig after working together, I know it’s all worth it. Nothing beats that feeling of turning your passion into something tangible—and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
INDUSTRY BREAK
DEMI: What advice would you give about ‘breaking’ into the industry?
Let me tell you, there was no magic “break” for me. No secret door that swung open with a golden ticket inside. What got me where I am today was hard work and a ton of persistence. I started with a journalism degree and worked my butt off, gaining experience and slowly climbing the ladder over the course of 25 years. Trust me, it wasn’t always pretty. There were plenty of knock-backs, setbacks, and moments when I thought, What am I even doing? But I kept going. Because here’s the thing—success in this industry doesn’t come easy. It’s not all glitz and glamour. It’s grit and grind.
My advice? Don’t expect to hit the highs right away. You have to earn them. You’ve got to prove yourself, learn the ropes, and accept that there’s no fast track. Keep pushing, stay focused, and don’t let the setbacks knock you down for long. Every “no” is just one step closer to the “yes.” And remember, it’s the hard work behind the scenes that builds the foundation for the big moments. So, keep at it—it’s totally worth it.
CONFIDENCE
DEMI: What advice would you give to someone struggling with confidence?
First things first, let’s get real—no one is confident all the time, myself included. If someone claims to be 100% confident, all the time, they’re probably not being totally honest. Confidence isn’t a constant state; it’s a skill, and like any skill, it takes time and practice to build.
What I believe is that anyone can improve their confidence—it’s totally possible. I work with people every day to teach specific tips and tricks that can help lift them up, especially on those days when they’re not feeling their best. Things like body language, mindset shifts, and positive self-talk are small, but powerful tools that you can lean on.
With time, practice, and a little dedication, confidence can become a natural part of who you are. It’s not about being perfect or never doubting yourself—it’s about having the tools to pick yourself up when you’re feeling less than great and knowing that you can get back on track.
My advice? Don’t expect confidence to come overnight. It’s a journey. Start small, practice, and before you know it, you’ll be embracing your power with a lot more ease. And hey, if I can do it, so can you!
PUBLIC SPEAKING
DEMI: What tips and advice would you offer for delivering an impactful presentation?
My number one rule? The 5Ps: Prior Preparation Prevents Piss-poor Performance. If you take the time to prepare, rehearse in front of a mirror, and truly know your material, you’ll feel way more confident when you’re presenting. Nerves usually come from feeling unprepared, so the more you practice, the less nervous you’ll feel.
Also, don’t forget to engage with your audience—make eye contact, speak with passion, and let your enthusiasm for the topic shine through. And here’s a big one: be yourself. Your personality is what will make your presentation memorable and unique. When you bring your authentic self to the stage, you automatically stand out. So, prepare, practice, and most importantly, enjoy the process!
FEARS
DEMI: DID YOU EXPERIENCE ANY FEARS STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
Oh, absolutely. Starting any new venture comes with a fair share of fear and self-doubt—it’s normal! Impostor syndrome was a huge hurdle for me. There were times I felt like a total fraud, like I didn’t deserve the opportunities I was getting. But the longer you’re in the game, the more you realize that pretty much everyone has those moments. It’s okay to feel scared or unsure, just don’t let those feelings hold you back.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned? Silencing my inner critic. Especially as women, we tend to be our own worst enemies, setting impossible standards for ourselves. I remind myself constantly that it’s okay to make mistakes—and that I’m allowed to take up space in the industry. Surrounding myself with supportive people—whether that’s family, friends, or colleagues—has also been a game-changer. Having that support system can really help boost your confidence and help you push through the fear.
Fear is a natural part of starting a business. The key is how you handle it. For me, it became a motivator to thoroughly research and assess every part of my business—whether that was the market, the product, or our strategies. We did the work to make sure we were meeting consumer needs, and one of our biggest fears was market acceptance. But we had multiple plans in place to minimise risks, and in the end, all that preparation paid off.
So, if fear starts to creep in? I just tell that bitch to piss off.
SHELLSHOCKED MEDIA
DEMI: How is ShellShocked Media unique compared to other media companies?
ShellShocked Media is all about pushing boundaries and creating something that truly connects. We’re not your typical video production company—we specialise in both high-quality video production and media and presentation training, combining creative content with practical skills. Our goal is simple: to help individuals and businesses tell their stories effectively and with impact.
What makes us stand out? We believe video is one of the most powerful storytelling tools out there, and we use it to create engaging, authentic content that resonates deeply with the audience. Whether it’s a product launch, a corporate announcement, or a social media campaign, we bring our clients’ messages to life with energy and authenticity.
But here’s the kicker: we’re not afraid to tackle the tough topics and uncomfortable conversations that others shy away from. Honesty and authenticity are at the core of everything we do. We want to help our clients really connect with their audience by being real—no fluff, no filler.
What also sets us apart is our media and presentation training. We work closely with clients to tailor our coaching to their unique needs, helping them develop their confidence, presence, and communication skills. Whether you’re preparing for a big presentation or just looking to boost your media presence, we’ve got you covered.
At ShellShocked Media, it’s all about combining creativity, strategy, and authenticity. We’re passionate about helping our clients achieve their goals and stand out in a crowded world. So, if you’re looking for bold ideas and results that make an impact, we’re the team to call.
PRESENTING COURSE
DEMI: What makes the ShellShocked Media training course stand out?
Oh, absolutely! As someone who’s constantly in the public eye, I can tell you—it’s not just about knowing what to say or having a great script. It’s everything: body language, tone of voice, energy, and the ability to connect with your audience. Too many media and presentation training programs are taught by people who know the theory, but not the real-world pressure of being in the spotlight.
Here’s where ShellShocked Media is different. With my experience as a regular TV presenter and event MC, I know exactly what it feels like to have the camera on you, to have an audience hanging on your every word, and to deal with those unexpected curveballs—because trust me, they always come. It’s one thing to know the technical skills, but I bring in that real-world insight to make sure you’re fully prepared for any situation.
Our course at ShellShocked Media isn’t your standard, beige, one-size-fits-all training. We focus on practical, personalised coaching that gives you the tools you need to own the stage, the screen, or the meeting room. It’s all about confidence, strategy, and ensuring you’ve got the skills to handle whatever comes your way, while still staying true to you.
We work closely with individuals and teams to provide feedback, guidance, and a level of support that you won’t find anywhere else. Whether it’s refining your presentation style or tackling nerves, our goal is to help you find your unique voice and shine in the public eye.
If you’re looking for something generic, you’ve come to the wrong place. We’re all about making you stand out, not blend in.
BUSINESS OWNER
DEMI: How has becoming your own boss changed your life and work?
When I look back at my journalism career, I realise that a lot of my challenges came from my struggles with authority. I was never one to hold my tongue, and let’s just say I didn’t always see eye-to-eye with my bosses. But instead of letting those conflicts hold me back, I took matters into my own hands and decided to become my own boss.
Taking control of my own destiny has been one of the most empowering experiences of my life. It’s given me the freedom to pursue my passions, follow my vision, and make decisions based on what I truly believe, without being restricted by someone else’s rules. Being an entrepreneur isn’t easy—it requires risk-taking, adaptability, and a clear vision. But the rewards? Totally worth it.
Having my own business also means I get to create opportunities—whether it’s hiring people, growing the industry, or contributing to something meaningful. The journey’s been challenging but incredibly fulfilling. I can honestly say that becoming my own boss was the best decision I ever made.
And sometimes, I’ll admit… I do feel like wearing a superhero cape to work.
KEY TO SUCCESS
DEMI: What are some key factors that contribute to becoming successful?
Running your own business is incredibly rewarding, but it’s not without its challenges. You’re responsible for everything—from the big decisions to owning up to mistakes. Rejection is part of the journey, and it can sting—especially when you’ve poured your heart and soul into a project. But learning not to take things too personally is key. You have to separate yourself from your business, which means you can handle setbacks without letting them define you. Having a strong support system is crucial, too. And remember, every experience—good or bad—is an opportunity to learn and grow.
Success isn’t handed to you; you have to hustle for it. Whether it’s landing a new client or booking a new gig, putting yourself out there means facing judgment. There have been times when I’ve curled up on the couch, questioning why I even bother. But if you’re truly passionate about what you do, rejection doesn’t keep you down for long.
In the public eye, the stakes feel even higher. When you’re on TV or in media, rejection isn’t just about a pitch—it feels like a rejection of you. That’s why developing a thick skin and staying true to yourself is so important. You can’t please everyone, so be authentic. People can sense when you’re being genuine, and that’s what builds real credibility.
Ultimately, I believe authenticity is the secret sauce to success. Sure, it might mean facing some rejection, but it’s worth it when you find success on your own terms. And hey, I say if you’re feeling vulnerable, it means you care.
ADAPT & PIVOT
DEMI: How has COVID-19 impacted your career, and how have you adapted?
Absolutely! At the height of it, I lost 80% of my work, and my husband lost 100% of his! I’ll be honest—I cried every day for two weeks. And you know what? That’s okay. It’s completely normal to feel that way in a crisis! Everyone was talking about “pivoting,” but honestly, that’s more like pirouetting on a tightrope. It was exhausting!
But then, I realised something: there was a new, unexpected need in the market. People were suddenly forced to work from home and were unfamiliar with tools like Zoom or Teams. As a TV presenter, I already had the skills to look good on camera, and my husband is a pro with lighting and tech. So, we decided to leverage our expertise and shift our focus.
We completely restructured our business and launched our first online course, Making Virtual Meetings Work. It’s all about helping people avoid the common virtual meeting disasters, like turning on a filter that makes you look like a potato for the entire call. I researched, produced, and presented the course in just two weeks, and my husband filmed and edited it. It felt great to have a clear purpose and provide something that people genuinely needed!
These days, I’m doing Channel Nine crosses via Skype, running media training over Zoom, and even MC-ing three virtual conferences. As an extrovert, performing to a tiny camera lens is weird—I usually feed off the energy of a live crowd—but hey, it’s a new skill and a whole new way of connecting. If nothing else, it’s taught me how to adapt quickly and creatively, and I’m all for it!

DEMI: How can individuals benefit from Shellshocked Media’s online courses?

WORKING REMOTELY
DEMI: What do you think are the long-term effects of COVID-19 on the way we work?
The pandemic has definitely accelerated a shift in how we work, and I don’t think we’re going back to the old ways. Virtual meetings have become the norm, and I truly believe they’re here to stay. With the tech we have now, virtual communication can be just as impactful as face-to-face, while saving companies time and money.
This shift will likely lead to long-term cost savings for businesses and a more flexible work culture. The key takeaway? Embrace the change, because the skills you gain from adapting to remote work will serve you long after the pandemic is over.
STAYING MOTIVATED
DEMI: What strategies do you use to stay motivated and focused during COVID-19?
The pandemic has definitely tested everyone, but I remind myself that “this too shall pass.” That mantra, along with the knowledge that we’re all in this together, helps keep me grounded. What inspires me most is seeing how people and businesses are adapting and thriving in the face of adversity.
I stay motivated by keeping connected with loved ones, dedicating time to hobbies, and practicing self-care—things that remind me life doesn’t stop, even if the world around us feels uncertain.
And yes, some days I might be chanting “This too shall pass” while rocking on the couch, but it works! Staying positive and focusing on what I can control is key to staying motivated.
Shelly Horton shares her insights on work, life, and media.
I love what we do because… It’s my passion.
Never be afraid of… Hard work.
My greatest talent is… I can say the alphabet backwards really quickly.
My biggest challenge is… Burnout.
I overcame that challenge by… Fly and flop holidays. Pick a place, fly there and flop by a pool for a week.
When starting a business one must… Prepare for ups and downs.
Most rewarding career moment so far… Starting my own business.
Best gig… Hosting my first solo TV show, Talking Married.
Celebrities I’ve loved working with… Lucy Lawless once let me try on her Xena Princess Warrior costume.
Funny MAFS moment … I got recognised in a nursing home because of MAFS, I didn’t expect that to be the target audience.
Most entertaining MAFS personality … Lizzie is my favourite MAFS star because she’s quirky and she drops truth bombs.
Favourite Netflix/Stan series or show… Killing Eve – ABC iView.
I Never go to work without … Breath mints and a positive attitude.
Never underestimate … A determined gal.
I hope to one day… Host my own TV show – The Shelly Show.

Every girl needs… A pair of killer heels. Sophia Webster is my favourite shoe designer.
On perfection… It’s actually a mind fuck. I used to be proud to be a perfectionist but now I see it as a drawback. Perfection is boring. Colour outside the lines to get noticed.
I absolutely love… Performing to a crowd – either in person, on TV or online.
Happiness is... Rescue puppies!
Success means… Being proud of yourself at all stages.
What it takes... Hard bloody work. It’s as simple as that!
It’s important… It’s nice to be important, but it’s important to be nice.
On purpose… Purpose is ever evolving. Love yourself and listen to yourself.
The dream… Doing what I love and travelling to exotic places. I’ve been to 52 countries so far.
In hindsight… I would not change much except I would have loved to start my business earlier in my career. It provides me with so much satisfaction.
Tips & tools… Yes, of course. In my online courses and one-on-one coaching, I always teach a breathing technique that helps control nerves and makes you calm. It’s probably my biggest tip and skill I teach people. I use it myself.
My favourite quote is… 5P’s- Prior Preparation Prevents Piss-poor Performance.
What’s next… After COVID-19 I will hug every person, I meet. I miss hugs so much.
Always… Be kind. Every time.
