I wake up each day feeling incredibly blessed to be able to pursue my passion as a live artist. As an artist, my craft is not just a means of making a living; it is a way of life and an extension of my being. Since my early childhood, I have found solace in creating art, whether it be through drawing, painting, or sketching. It has always been a way for me to express my emotions and bring peace to my soul. Art is not just a job for me, it is a lifestyle that brings joy and fulfillment to my every day.

THE DREAM

DEMI: WHAT WAS THE DREAM & HOW DID IT PAN OUT?

I had a dream to become an animator for Disney, and I even received a letter from Disney responding to my job application stating that I needed more experience, but to keep working on my art. Along with my passion for art, I also had significant business experience, having owned, and operated several companies in my earlier years.

However, I never intended to become a professional artist, but as I pursued my art, it became clear to me that it was my true calling. My purpose eventually presented itself to me, and I embraced it with all my heart.

The idea of live performance painting came to me from my love of music. As a DJ, I saw the opportunity to combine music, performance, and art into a unique and exciting experience for my audience. I have since become a master of this art form, creating beautiful portraits on stage in a matter of minutes while sharing my inspiring story with the audience.

As an artist, my niche is live portrait painting on stage, where I can showcase my talent and story to engage large audiences. My performances are unique in their blend of art and inspiration, earning me a reputation for ‘Inspirational Artistry’. I have had the privilege of performing at a variety of events, from charity functions and business seminars to high-profile awards ceremonies such as the ‘Grammy Awards’ after-party.

DEMI: WHAT ADVICE WOULD GIVE ABOUT DOING WHAT YOU LOVE?

Pursuing one’s passion and purpose is never easy. It takes hard work and dedication. The alternative, waking up every morning at 6am to commute for hours to a job you don’t love, is not an appealing option either. For me, the drive to pursue my passion came from facing death. I promised myself that once I had won the biggest battle of my life, being sick, I would pursue the one thing that always put my soul at ease, which was art. Despite the challenges, I am grateful every day to be living my dream and doing what I love.

If you have a passion in life, or there’s something that ignites the fire within, something that makes your soul glow every time you talk about it to your friends, then go & do that.

I’m a huge believer of the law of attraction, which is the ability to attract into our lives whatever we are focusing on. Whether you believe it or not, when you immerse yourself wholly into something, things start to show up relating to that particular thing you never thought would have been possible.

Always look for the signs & what you’re being pulled towards!

If you had told me years ago when I was lying in a hospital bed that I would one day be painting portraits live on stage for influential people all over the world, I wouldn’t have believed it. However, I always knew that art would play a significant role in my life’s journey, and it certainly has.

STARTUP ADVICE

DEMI: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE NEW FOUNDERS?

I had a clear vision and blueprint of where I wanted to position my brand, and to this day, I haven’t veered away from that path. I believe that all entrepreneurs should focus on what they excel at, choose their own lane, and then go all in. Start small, build your business steadily, and stay true to your identity and the message you want your brand to convey.

I have a saying and it’s: Simply START!

STARTUP FEARS

DEMI: DID FACE ANY FEARS STARTING YOUR BUSINESS?

Art was viewed as a hobby, and I was repeatedly told that it was not a “real job” and that one cannot make money from it. Fear was a factor from the start, but fortunately, I use fear as fuel to prove people wrong. Facing death has given me a new perspective on fear. Now, I view it as just a word, a bunch of letters that humans have unfortunately attached to a negative outcome. While fear will always exist due to human conditioning, acknowledging it, quickly destroying it, and moving on is key to fulfilling one’s life purpose.

I use fear to my advantage.

IN HINDSIGHT

DEMI: LOOKING BACK, WOULD YOU CHANGE ANYTHING?

It’s understandable to have regrets and wish that things had been different, but it’s important to remember that everything happens in its own time and for a reason. Your journey and experiences have shaped you into the person you are today and led you to where you are now. It’s never too late to pursue your passions and make a positive impact, and your story is a testament to that. Keep moving forward and focusing on your purpose, and you will continue to create a meaningful and fulfilling life for yourself.

DEMI: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

As a business owner, I have the flexibility to set my own schedule and prioritise my workload according to my needs. While I appreciate the luxury of being able to sleep in, there are other aspects of entrepreneurship that may not be as glamorous. However, these challenges are outweighed by the satisfaction of pursuing my passion for ‘ART’. For me, creating art is not just a job, it’s a lifestyle. I don’t have a specific start or end time for my workday because I am always working on something related to my craft. Nonetheless, I wouldn’t have it any other way, as the fulfillment I gain from my work makes it all worthwhile.

Art is my life! I am living my passion & purpose! This outweighs any and all hiccups I may face along the way.

THE CHALLENGES

DEMI: WHAT ARE SOME OF BIGGEST CHALLENGES FACED IN BUSINESS?

Being both the ‘Performer’ and the ‘Founder’ can sometimes create a conflict of interest, so it’s important to separate the two when dealing with clients. You need to maintain your persona as the artist and also run your business professionally.

Fortunately, I have been able to build a reliable team that handles all the administrative and business aspects, allowing me to focus on my art and performances. This division of responsibilities has been crucial to the success of my brand and has allowed me to keep growing and evolving as an artist.

ON INSPIRATION

DEMI: WHO HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION ON YOUR JOURNEY?

Having mentors is crucial for personal and professional growth, as there will always be people who know more than you and can offer valuable guidance. Throughout my journey, I have been fortunate to have many mentors, but one who stands out is Bruce Lee. He continues to inspire me, particularly during my formative years as a martial arts practitioner. His philosophy and approach to life have been a significant influence on my personal and artistic development, and I strive to emulate his dedication, passion, and unwavering pursuit of excellence in everything I do.

You have to find people that believe in you & want to grow with you.

And I was thrilled to have the opportunity to perform at the celebration of ‘Bruce Lee’s 75th Anniversary’ in Hong Kong recently, where I had the honour of meeting his daughter Shannon and wife Linda. It was a truly spectacular and memorable moment for me.

DEMI: WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE NEW FOUNDERS?

There are certain key elements that have played a significant role in my personal success, including staying true to who I am, adhering to what my brand represents, and following the path that feels right. As an artist, I have never conformed to traditional norms, particularly when it comes to my style of art. Although it breaks many rules in the art world, it has proved to be successful for me thus far.

DEMI: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CELEBRITY PIECE & DID YOU FEEL ANY PRESSURE?

Sir Michael Parkinson is a renowned British talk show host and journalist, known for interviewing some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, including Muhammad Ali and Madonna. He was actually the first celebrity I painted live, with him in the room. Surprisingly, I didn’t feel too much pressure at the time as I wasn’t aware of who he was. However, after the event, I learned about his impressive career and accomplishments. Looking back, it was probably a blessing in disguise that I wasn’t overwhelmed by his celebrity status during my first live performance.

LIVE PERFORMANCE

DEMI: HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING ON STAGE & WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ABOUT PERFORMING?

It’s not uncommon to experience nervousness before a performance, even if you have done it many times before. The key is to use that nervous energy to your advantage and let it fuel your performance. Adrenaline can be a powerful ally when channelled correctly. Additionally, preparation is key to feeling confident and ready for any event. Even with weeks or months to prepare, it’s important to stay focused and committed to delivering your best performance each and every time.

Surround yourself with a good team that you can rely on. It’s important to have people around you who believe in you and your abilities and can help you in areas where you may be weaker. They can offer support, guidance, and practical assistance, which can help to calm your nerves and allow you to focus on your performance. Remember that nerves are normal, but with preparation, practice, and a good team, you can overcome them and give your best performance.

Find something that relaxes you before you go on stage, & make sure you have a great support team in place.

DEMI: WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED?

The best advice I received is to stay humble and true to oneself, which allows for continued self-reflection and personal growth, essential for staying grounded and focused on the values that drive us. Success is not just about making money; it’s also about making a positive impact and leaving a meaningful legacy. By staying true to our values and maintaining a focus on impact over profit, we can build businesses that are not only successful but also socially responsible and meaningful, making a difference in people’s lives and the world around us.

DEMI: WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE STARTUP FOUNDERS?

One piece of advice that I would give to a new founder is to ensure that they can articulate their business concept concisely and clearly. If you can explain your business in 60 seconds or less, it demonstrates that you have a clear understanding of your product or service and its value proposition. This clarity can also help in pitching to investors, partners, or customers.

If you don’t understand your business, service, product, then your clients definitely won’t!

Additionally, it’s crucial to maintain a level head and avoid allowing ego or emotion to cloud your judgement as a leader. Making decisions based on rational thinking and data analysis rather than emotions or personal biases can lead to more successful outcomes for your business. Remember to stay open to feedback, learn from mistakes, and remain adaptable to changes in the market or industry.

DEMI: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE UPCOMING ARTISTS?

I believe everyone can be an artist in their own way and it’s important to recognise the art in all forms of work. However, I also believe that it’s important to not limit oneself to just one form of art or style. Experimentation and exploration can lead to the discovery of new styles and techniques that can enhance and evolve one’s art. Therefore, while it’s important to have a distinct style that represents you, it’s also important to keep an open mind and continue to grow and evolve as an artist.

THE BOOK

DEMI: CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR BOOK & WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE IT?

In my book, “My Disease, My Teacher,” I share my personal experiences of growing up feeling “different” and unsure of my place in the world. Art became my refuge during these difficult times, and it has played a significant role in my life ever since.

The inspiration behind my book was to give a voice to the silent sufferers in the world who may have had their freedom of speech taken away from them through fear and manipulation. I hope that my story resonates with readers and connects with them on a deeper personal level, or perhaps even helps someone they know who needs to be heard.

Through my own journey of facing my hardest opponent, myself, in the biggest match of my life, I defied the odds and faced death head-on. My story shows that giving up is never an option, and I hope that it inspires readers to keep pushing through their own challenges.

DEMI: WHAT’S YOUR OPINION ON ACHIEVING A WORK/LIFE BALANCE?

While I may not be the best person to offer advice on work/life balance, as I am always creating in some form or another and my mind doesn’t seem to stop, I would suggest listening to your body and paying attention to the signs life is sending you. If you find yourself overworked or if your business starts affecting your relationships, health, or other aspects of your life, be conscious of it and make the necessary adjustments. It’s a simple but important step to maintain a healthy work/life balance.

It’s a way of life for me! Those closest to me totally understand, & are as passionate about what I do as much as I am.

FAMILY IMPACT

In my opinion, it’s crucial to create a clear separation between work and personal life, and to know when to switch on and off, even if only for a brief period. After all, life is short and precious, and it’s essential to make the most of it. While it’s undoubtedly essential to dedicate yourself to your business, it’s equally important to prioritise and maintain healthy relationships with the people you care about. They will be the ones who will support you when you need it the most, as I’ve personally experienced.
